How do you climb a mountain? One step at a time.
That’s an old saying that many of us have heard from time to time. We might ask ourselves why so many aspiring writers don’t apply that principle more frequently.
Let’s look at what we can do if we’ll spend a little time every day and not give up. How do we write a book? One keystroke at a time. One word at a time. One page at a time.
The average speaking rate is about 150 words per minute. Chances are, you can’t type that fast, so what can you do? How about 15 words per minute? At that rate, you could finish 300 words in 20 minutes.
At this point, the math is simple. Spend 20 minutes each day averaging only 15 words per minute and you have 365 pages per year. That’s enough for one book every six months, so here’s the secret: just take that one small step each day, and you’re sure to have a first draft finished by this time next year.
