Like Goldilocks, who had to test the porridge bowls, chairs, and beds until she found the one that was “just right,” writers are often looking for the perfect writing opportunity. A contest too intimidating, a market too difficult, an audience who might not understand, an experience too painful to tell—all your “too hot” or “too cold” possibilities—can give you plenty of reasons not to write.
One day, inspiration may strike like lightning. But after that surge of strength, your motivation can easily die amid the feeling that your skills are inadequate, the cost is too high, or the chance of failure is too great.
What’s the answer? Write when you’re hot. Write when you’re not. Keep writing, and eventually you’ll improve the mix of hot and cold until you have a publishable piece that is “just right.”
Love the Goldilocks story, whether the soup’s hot or cold…write. Sho’ needed that.
